Health, safety & wellbeing
Groundworks means deep excavations, heavy plant, live services and busy sites. On every Civio site the aim is the same: everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.
Assessed by CHAS · Compliance Chain · 100% CSCS
Safety at Civio is led from the top. The business is director-led: Mitch Kirov prices every package and is on site while it is delivered, so the person responsible for health and safety is the person you see on site.
We plan our work under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, induct everyone who comes onto our sites, and use only CSCS-carded operatives. Our safety management is independently assessed through CHAS and Compliance Chain, and the same standards apply whether we are clearing a site or laying the last kerb.

How we keep sites safe
The same four steps on every job, large or small.
01
Plan
Before we start, we survey the site, check service records and write risk assessments and method statements for the work. On CDM projects we coordinate with the principal contractor and designers from the outset.
02
Induct
Everyone who comes onto a Civio site is inducted on the site rules, the hazards, emergency arrangements and welfare. CSCS cards and plant tickets are checked before anyone starts work.
03
Brief and supervise
Each day starts with a briefing on the work, the risks and anything that has changed. Supervision stays on site, and anyone can stop a job they think is unsafe.
04
Check and improve
Excavations, plant and temporary works are inspected and recorded. Near misses are reported and talked through, so the lessons reach the whole team.
Accredited and assessed

CHAS
The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme. CHAS assesses our health and safety policy, risk assessments, training, accident reporting and site inspections.

Compliance Chain
A Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) registered scheme. SSIP certificates are recognised across member schemes, which cuts down repeat pre-qualification for main contractors.

100% CSCS
Every Civio operative holds a CSCS card, which shows they have the training and qualifications for the job they do on site.
Our health and safety policy, accreditation certificates and insurance details are available for pre-qualification on request.
Safe on live sites
Much of our work is on schools and hospitals that stay open while we build. Pupils, patients, staff and visitors share the site with our plant, so the arrangements are agreed with the site team before we start.
- Works areas fenced off and segregated, with clear signed routes around them
- Deliveries and noisy work planned around the school day and clinical access
- Banksmen for every plant and vehicle movement near people
- Access for emergency vehicles kept clear at all times

Looking after our people
Safety goes beyond hard hats and hi-vis. Construction carries real pressure, from long days to time away from home, and we treat mental health as seriously as physical safety.
- Clean, proper welfare on every site
- Sensible hours and planned breaks
- An open door: any problem, at work or outside it, can be raised with a supervisor or directly with Mitch
- No blame for raising a safety concern or stopping a job

Common questions
Can you send RAMS and safety documents before we appoint you?
Yes. We send site-specific risk assessments and method statements before work starts, and can provide our health and safety policy, accreditation certificates and insurance details for your pre-qualification.
Are all your operatives CSCS carded?
Yes. Our workforce is 100% CSCS-certified, and plant operators hold the cards for the machines they run.
How do you avoid underground services?
We check the utility records, scan the area with a cable avoidance tool before we dig, and hand-dig trial holes to expose services close to the works.
Do you work on schools and hospitals that are open?
Yes. Recent projects include West Middlesex University Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital and several schools. We segregate our works areas and plan deliveries and noisy work around the site.
Who is responsible for health and safety at Civio?
Our Managing Director, Mitch Kirov. He is on site while our packages are delivered and is the first point of contact for any safety question.
Need our safety documents?
Tell us about the project and we will send our RAMS, health and safety policy and accreditation certificates for your pre-qualification.
